Jeffrey R. Bergen, President and CEO

 

Upon obtaining his B.A./B.S. degree in chemistry from Columbia University, Mr. Bergen became Vice President, Sales and Marketing, for Forma Scientific, Inc. During the period 1970-80 the company enjoyed compounded annual revenue growth in excess of 30% in becoming the largest cell and tissue culture equipment company in the United States. In 1980 Forma was acquired by Mallinckrodt Chemical Company. In 1981 Mr. Bergen and others founded Queue Systems, Inc., a life sciences company that developed novel technology for the cryopreservation of biological materials, and bioreactor instrumentation for fermentation processes.

 

Queue was acquired by Rheem Corporation in 1987, when Bergen joined Lake Shore Cryotronics as Director of Marketing. In 1993 Bergen assumed responsibility for business development and technology acquisition. He was on loan to BioCrystal for assistance in all technology areas until being named the company's Chief Executive Officer in November 2001.

 

Marlin O. Thurston, Ph.D., Secretary-Treasurer

 
 

Dr. Thurston is the company's Secretary-Treasurer. A BioCrystal founder, Dr. Thurston has been Director of Engineering since 1998. He obtained his BA and MSc degrees in Physics from the University of Colorado, and received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University. Dr. Thurston was a professor in Ohio State's School of Electrical Engineering, where he served as Department Chairman for twelve years. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1982.

   
 

Dr. Thurston was President of Thurston-Bell Associates, Inc., of Columbus, Ohio, in the period 1982-92, and a Partner at Thurston, Bell & Olson. During this time he was also Director of Instrument Development for Columbus-based Neoprobe Corporation where he developed a gamma probe for interoperative use in the detection of colorectal cancer. Dr. Thurston is co-inventor of a continuous flow technique for the production of fluorescent nanocrystals.  

    
 

Dr. Thurston has authored or participated as an inventor in 22 issued patents.  

 

John M. Swartz, Ph.D., Chairman of the Board of Directors

 
 

A BioCrystal founder, Dr. Swartz received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University where he taught in the School of Electrical Engineering until 1977. Dr. Swartz and his brother David founded Lake Shore Cryotronics, Inc., a technology leader in the development and worldwide sale of thermometry, instruments and magnetic/electrical property measurement systems to academic and industrial customers in the material sciences physics fields. Dr. Swartz also founded North Star, an affiliate company that became a market leader in the sale of magnetic encoders for the process control industry. North Star was acquired by Danaher Corporation in 2001.

   
 

Dr. Swartz is Chairman of Lake Shore, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of BioCrystal, where he also oversees investment/unit holder activities for the company.

   

Walter J. Doyle

   
 

Walter Doyle is the President of Forest Capital, an angel capital investment firm. Previously, Mr. Doyle was President and CEO of Industrial Data Technologies Corporation (IDT) for 21 years. IDT develops, manufactures and markets high technology products for factory automation applications in the steel, automotive, food and chemical industries. Mr. Doyle founded the company in 1976 and sold it to Eaton Corporation in 1989. Eaton subsequently changed IDT's name to Cutler Hammer Automation. Earlier, following US Army service as a paratrooper, Mr. Doyle worked for Industrial Nucleonics/Accuray Corporation in NYC and Columbus, Ohio.

   
 

Mr. Doyle earned an Electric Engineering degree from City College of New York (CCNY) and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He is a member and/or on the Board of a number of local business and civic organizations.

   

Larry E. Anderson, CPA

   
 

Mr. Anderson earned a BS degree from Miami University and completed post-graduate studies at Xavier University and the Wharton School of Finance. He joined Coopers & Lybrand (C&L) where he became a CPA Partner. Mr. Anderson served the firm in various capacities: as National Director of their paper and publishing industry business sector; manager of their real estate and construction industry business activity in Columbus, Ohio; and resident Partner in Charge of C&L's audit practice in Moscow, Russia, where he functioned as engagement partner for many international and Russian companies. He was a founding Board Member and Officer of the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia.

   
 

Following retirement from C&L, Mr. Anderson invested six years in the medical field – as CEO of a medical device start up, Managing Director Europe (London) for a publicly traded cancer diagnostic company, and as CFO for companies in low temperature measurement, cancer therapy, and medical instrumentation. Mr. Anderson is presently Markley Visiting Professor of Finance at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He serves on Boards of several non-profit and for profit organizations.
